Colin James has worn many hats during his long and storied career. When Colin first hit the scene almost a quarter century ago, he became an instant rock guitar hero, mentored by the legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan. But in many ways Colin James has been Canada’s quiet superstar – going about the business of making consistently excellent music, all the while etching out his own unique and important place in this country’s musical history.
Yet for fans at home in Vancouver, the city holds a special place in James career. It was where in the fall of 1988 music fans witnessed an unprecedented five night stand of consecutive shows at the legendary Commodore Ballroom.
Colin’s five night run in November of that year not only put Vancouver on notice that he had arrived, but was part of the slingshot that launched him across Canada, where soon everyone would be aware of this amazing talent. Since then, this iconic Canadian has topped the charts as a pop vocalist, recorded an acclaimed blues album and led the swing revival with his Little Big Band, which he both fronted and produced. He has performed for the Queen, sold multi-platinum many times over and continues to sell out shows coast to coast. Along the way, he’s written memorable hit songs and given us distinctive covers of timeless classics with his newest album teasing that the best is still yet to come.
James’ run of shows still holds a place in the history of the Commodore putting James in exclusive company with those who’ve been on the Ballroom’s venerable stage. While other artists have performed multiple consecutive nights, only a few have so been able to repeat a five night string of consecutive sold out performances. In turn, the Commodore holds a special place for James, and a stage he’s long desired to return to perform on.
For fans, this makes for a unique opportunity to see an artist of James’ talent and stature, return to the up close and personal setting of not only arguably Canada’s best venue, but considered one of the top ten influential clubs in North America.
It’s Colin’s birthday today! In celebration, he’d like to share this photo with you of himself as a youngster aged about 8 or 9…
